Here is Vrksasana, or Tree Pose, with my little boy.
Tree pose is one of my favorite poses just by itself. It calms the mind, strengthens your legs and your ability to balance. It also stretches out your hips, which is said to release emotional tension and stress.
To get into this pose with a little one, hold him on your hip with one hand tightly around him and the other hand on a wall or chair for balance (this can be done without balance assistance if you are comfortable doing so). Your little one can either face in or out. Then slowly raise one foot up, bending at the knee, to meet the inside of the opposite leg. Always stay away from your knee to avoid any unnecessary pressure on the joint. Instead, place your foot on your calf or the inside of your thigh. Rest your little one on your upper thigh of your bent leg, and continue to hold them tightly. Lengthen your spine, square off your hips and always remember to keep your breath steady.
To switch to the other side, simply release the pose and move your little one to your opposite hip. Repeat all steps on the other side of your body.
