steps to a handstand.

A handstand is one of the most advanced yoga poses out there. It can be intimidating, and even some of the most advanced yogis are never able to get it down. We all know that yoga is NOT about the poses and which poses you can and can't do, but every now and then I like to challenge myself with a pose I am unable to do. By doing so, it builds more strength and confidence in myself.

I am one of those that have never been able to do a handstand! So I have been working hard on it and I have been determined to get it down. Below are three basic steps that I have used to help achieve my handstand.

To first get the feel for it, I would face the wall and walk my feet up. Then, with one foot, I would let go and stack my hips above my shoulders. Then slowly I would push off with my other foot and try to balance both feet overhead.

Next, to get used to getting into the stand by myself without walking up the wall, I would put the wall behind me. Then I would push off of the ground, getting the momentum I needed to prop myself up. The wall would be behind me to catch me. Then I would do the same that I did before... I would lift one foot off of the wall at a time until I was comfortable with having both feet in the air without using the wall for help.
Once I was able to get myself up in the handstand without climbing the wall or using the wall for balance, I would then use a couch (or bed) to put behind my head. This was not used to help support my head or body, but used for a guide. I was surprised by the help this one gave me! It quickly became my favorite. It was also there to catch me if I fell.

​With the help of these three steps, you can achieve my handstand. Persistence and hard work pays off! Now on to the next challenging pose... :)
