For the next few blog posts I will be doing a series of my favorite lunges.
This lunge/twist is one of my favorites. By adding the twist to the lunge, it quickly becomes a full body pose. Since you are in a lunge, you are working your legs and stretching your hips. Then when you add the twist, you work your back and arms. This can increase stamina and physical endurance all throughout your body. Doing full body poses can be extremely exhilarating, especially when your body is stiff from a busy day at work or with kids.
To get into this pose, take a lunge. Place your back knee and the top of your foot on the floor behind you. I like to take my leg wider and closer to the edge of my mat in order to get a deeper stretch in my hips. Take your arm on the same side and lift it overhead and behind you. Point the palm of the hand to the ceiling and bring your gaze behind you. Keep your chest high and shoulders down and away from your ears.
For a deeper stretch, take your hand on the ground and put on the inside of your front leg. Push against your thigh using your arm to get a deeper stretch. Remember to listen to your body and don't push yourself farther than you should.
Repeat on the opposite side.
