Bolster SUPPORT - part I.

Sometimes the purpose for props can be confusing. Most just end up avoiding them because they are not sure how to use them. I was one of those who did this when I first started practicing yoga and I am still learning new ways to use them. 

​Here are three different poses that get easier and more comfortable if you use a bolster. I am pregnant in these photos, but these can be done whether you are pregnant or not.

When seated, put the bolster under your hips and simply sit on top of it. Then cross at the ankles and bend your knees. This is a seated pose most of us do on a very regular basis. But in reality, to get the alignment right, your knees should be in line with your hips or below them. The bolster helps to prop your hips up to achieve this perfect alignment and better comfort.

Child's pose is a favorite among many yogis. To get some extra comfort, place the bolster under your chest and rest your head on top of it. You can place the bolster all the way to your pubic bone for maximum comfort.

​If you are pregnant, you will want to avoid resting your belly on the bolster. Just simply move the bolster up and let your belly hang. This can be a very comfortable pose since we don't get to take advantage of very many prone positions during pregnancy. 
​
On a regular day, putting my legs up the wall is one of my favorite go to poses! There are so many benefits. To offer more support to your hips, back, and spine, you can situate the bolster under your hips. This even gives the pose more of an 'inversion' feel since your hips are now above your heart.

​The bolster I like to use is from Hugger Mugger. I love the quality and comfort it gives. It is sturdy and soft. They have many different colors to choose from as well as other styles.
